Jepsen is currently celebrating her second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the infectious pop gem, and Billboard reports that a lot of her success may be due to social media. “Social media have really helped many of these newer artists explode quicker than they would’ve before, because it’s another way for friends to discuss and share their favorite music,” WHTZ (Z100) New York program director Sharon Dastur told the mag. “Any kind of additional exposure that the audience gets to these songs, whether it’s from a viral video, a song being covered on ‘Glee,’ or parodied on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ only helps radio.”
Jepsen’s track has inspired about a zillion viral videos — including some by celebs, including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, James Franco and Katy Perry — so her success is hardly surprising on that front.
Jepsen is the first artist since Kesha to hit No. 1 with her very first single. Her chart success and viral dedications aren’t the only accolades she’s received for the sugar-drenched ditty. She also cleaned house at the MuchMusic Video Awards in her native Canada for the song, which she also performed at the festivities. Go girl!
