Ivan Reitman Says New ‘Ghostbusters’ Film Likely Coming in 2019
An animated film AND a live action film are in the works.
Speaking with the crowd at Comic-Con today, Ghostbusters creative force Ivan Reitman indicated that the future of the franchise is brighter than you might be expecting after the lackluster reception to Paul Feig’s reboot. For starters, the IDW comic series is going strong, and at least TWO more movies are in the works.
Likely first up is an animated feature film, which Reitman spilled the beans on.
“I think we have wonderful plans, [including] an animated feature that we’re deep in design on already… a really great story,” Reitman said, via Den of Geek. “That’s going to surprise everybody, I think, when it comes out. And we’re dealing with Ghost World quite a lot. We’re looking at the film from a ghost point-of-view, and the Ghostbusters from a ghost point-of-view. I think that would be something very interesting.”
He added, “And of course a new live-action film.”
So how about that live-action film? Reitman teased that maybe, just maybe, the worlds of the original Ghostbusters and the reboot Ghostbusters will collide!
“It was clear a lot of people weren’t happy the original Ghostbusters world wasn’t included in the new one,” said Reitman. “I love seeing [writer Erik Burnham’s take on] Kate McKinnon’s character’s interactions with Spengler [in the Ghostbusters 101 comic books]. It’s very rich, and has given me lots of ideas for a new film.”
The 35th anniversary of Ghostbusters is on the way in 2019, and Reitman noted that “the studio is going to try to tie one of the new films close to that date.”
Will that be the animated feature or the live action film? Only time will tell.
