Justin Timberlake Reacts To Being Called Out During Kanye West’s VMA Video Vanguard Speech
Over the course of his 13-minute Video Vanguard acceptance speech last night, along with casually putting his name in the running early for the presidential election in 2020, Kanye West revealed that Justin Timberlake was in tears on the night of the Grammy Awards in 2007.
It happened while Yeezy was making a point about the idea of pitting talented artists against each other at award shows, and how arbitrary it is to determine that one person’s art is ‘better’ than another. And in doing so, he specifically called out the FutureSex/LoveSounds singer as an example.
“I just…I sat at the Grammys and saw Justin Timberlake and Cee-Lo lose. Gnarls Barkley [St. Elsewhere] and the FutureSex album…Justin, I ain’t trying to put you on blast but I saw that man in tears, bro. And I was thinking like, he deserves to win album of the year,” he passionately explained to the crowd. (The Dixie Chicks ultimately won that year.)
Justin would later respond to being called out on Twitter — and at first, it seemed as though he might have taken offense, calling Kanye “real cute, y’all.” But a few hours later, he returned to react after having watched the entire speech. “Btw… I JUST watched my man ‘Ye’s FULL speech… He always has a point. And I support it. #truth,” he wrote. Evidently, JT didn’t mind being called out in order to make a point about competition among pop stars.
While the media has made the most of his presidential run announcement in the last few seconds of the speech, there were plenty of points worthy of discussion. Do you think award shows still have value — especially the MTV Video Music Awards — in 2015? What do you think of Kanye’s point about pitting artists against each other? Let’s discuss.
