Maren Morris Had No Idea Ryan Hurd’s Proposal Was Coming
Ryan Hurd proposed to Maren Morris over the Fourth of July Weekend, at his family’s lake house in Michigan — and Morris says she had no idea it was coming. It was so unexpected, in fact, that Morris wasn’t at all dressed up for the occasion.
“I really had no idea,” Morris admits in a CMT Hot 20 Countdown interview, “and I had sweats on and my glasses — did not look cute at all — so that’s how I knew he was serious.”
Morris and Hurd shared the news of their engagement on July 9, just under a week after he popped the question on July 3. Hurd tells Rare Country that he and Morris were celebrating the Fourth of July with “like, 15 people” at that lake house when it happened, and that it was a fairly spontaneous decision on his part.
“I had had that [ring] in my pocket for a while, and I was just looking for a good time. I woke up on the 3rd, and I said to myself that that was the day,” Hurd remembers. “But there was no point where we were alone together, and so we jumped in the boat and had about 20 minutes together.
“It was really special,” he adds. “It was a beautiful night, and there weren’t a lot of people on the water. It was July 3rd, so there were fireworks all around the lake …”
Both Morris and Hurd are singer-songwriters signed to Sony Music Nashville. The two met in 2013 during a songwriting session, when they were randomly put together to write; during that session, they penned “Last Turn Home,” which Tim McGraw recorded.
Morris and Hurd had known each other “for only a couple of years” before they began dating, “but there was always this writing chemistry in the room.”
“Eventually, the timing of it was undeniable,” Morris says. “We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?’”
Morris’ star has been rising since the release of her debut single, “My Church,” in early 2017. In May, Hurd released his first single since signing to Sony, “Love in a Bar;” it’s inspired by his relationship with Morris.
