Sammy Hagar isn’t confirming a reunion with Van Halen; he’s not even directly addressing it. But if you’re inclined to read between the lines – and plenty of fans are – there may just be something worth noting in his latest thoughts on the possibility of a call from Eddie Van Halen: After all, he discusses it in terms of “when,” before correcting himself.

“My favorite thing to say without biting my own tongue is no comment,” Hagar recently told Ontario’s Daily Bulletin. “Every time I turned around, it was a no-win situation. If I say what I feel … I would always get 50 percent of the Van Halen fans saying, ‘Right on, you rule.’ Then the haters would dog me like, ‘You’re always dogging Van Halen.’ I’m going to shut up. They get their wish. We’ll see what happens when it happens — if it happens.”

Two pieces of evidence seemed to point to a possible cooling of this long-simmering feud: Hagar reached out to Eddie Van Halen on his birthday on Twitter, and Michael Anthony – Hagar’s bandmate in Van Halen and then in Chickenfoot – was photographed recently with a VH amp. Anthony later shot down the rumors.

They’ve tried this before, and history tells us that it didn’t go so well. But Van Halen also initially struggled to mount a successful reunion with Hagar’s predecessor David Lee Roth before finally getting it right during a period that produced 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth.

Whatever happens, Hagar isn’t sitting by idly. His television program “Rock & Roll Road Trip With Sammy Hagar” premiered in late January on AXS TV. Hagar has also been busy with his new band Circle, which also features Anthony.
