The Animals Tangle With King Kong in New ‘Skull Island’ Trailer
The band’s 1965 hit rings out amid the barrage of onscreen action in the ad for the latest reboot of the classic King Kong tale. The movie, which opens on March 10, is set in 1973 on an island unspoiled by man and shrouded in mystery. Stars John C. Reilly, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Corey Hawkins are all featured in the clip, which mixes some comedy and state-of-the-art visual spectacle along with the big ape.
“We Gotta Get Out of This Place” was written by Brill Building legends Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil in 1965, and was originally supposed to be released as a single by Mann himself. However, before that could happen, the Animals recorded their own version, which immediately shot up the charts and ultimately halted Mann’s single.
“I was about to release my record, and Donnie Kirshner said, ‘I’ve got some good news and some bad news,” Mann recalled in the 2001 documentary The Hitmakers. “The bad news, he said, is you can’t release your record. The good news is the Animals just put it out in England and it’s No. 2 in one week.”
The record was a worldwide smash and would go onto to become an unofficial theme song for many soldiers in Vietnam.
