Everything Is Noise is hosting the exclusive premiere of “Walk Into The Ocean,” the new video/single from New York art punk/noise rock act CINEMA CINEMA. The song is the latest precursor of the band’s impending seventh LP, Mjölnir, nearing July release on Nefarious Industries.
CINEMA CINEMA was established in 2008 by Brooklyn-born cousins vocalist/guitarist Ev Gold and drummer Paul Claro. Touring extensively through the past fifteen years, CINEMA CINEMA has performed over 475 shows across 11 countries, with multiple treks alongside SST Records founder Greg Ginn, including a 45-date North American tour opening for Black Flag in 2014, select dates supporting Black Flag in 2013, and shared dates in 2010, 2011, and 2012 with Ginn’s other outfits: The Royal We and The Taylor Texas Corrugators. In addition, the band has half a dozen European tours to their credit, including a 2013 stint in support of Martin Bisi Band.
On Mjölnir, CINEMA CINEMA’s Gold and Claro invited polymath percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Thor Harris (Swans, Angels Of Light, Shearwater) to collaborate with them on the entire album. The record was recorded at historic BC Studio in Brooklyn, New York with legendary noise producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, John Zorn, Boredoms). Inviting Harris into the fold inspires new direction for the ensemble. Exploring his creative repertoire, Thor makes use of BC’s synth collection along with an assortment of drums and arcane percussion pieces to leave his fingerprints on the proceedings. The trio submerge themselves in the strange beauty of chaotic sound, captured inside BC’s cavernous recording space.
Tracked just before the pandemic, Bisi spent time cultivating the sessions in the months that followed, helping shape one of the band’s most expressive records to date. This marking the third time that CINEMA CINEMA and Martin have worked together (including 2014’s A Night At The Fights and 2017’s Man Bites Dog), the familiarity breeds wild results. The tracks were mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering, and Mjölnir was finished with artwork by Lauren Kelley.
The new “Walk Into The Ocean” video was directed by Thomas D. Rotenberg. Ev Gold writes about the song, “I don’t know how to swim. I’m one of those kids from the city that never learned. The ocean has always scared me. Faced some of that fear making this video. We spent a cold Sunday morning this spring walking into the water, filming, freezing, and having a cathartic experience on a deserted beach in Staten Island. I’m still cleaning sand out of areas that shall remain nameless.”
The write-up at Everything Is Noise reads in part, “Crackling lo-fi-esque guitars and steadily driving percussive pulse topped with half spoken half yelled vocals creates a picturesque and gripping mood that encapsulates the listener fully, acting as a taste of great things to come… ‘Walk Into The Ocean’ exemplifies that you really don’t need to cram the audible spectrum with all kinds of nonsense, but can rely practically only on dynamics and emotion to truly hit the target… Both musically and visually, ‘Walk Into The Ocean’ is simultaneously a gratifying yet grating experience, giving us a proper peek of what the entirety of Mjölnir will entail.”
