Having walked across that famous walkway a few times, I can tell you, visiting the EMI/Abbey Road Studios is quite the pilgrimage for any rock fan.
What we learn from David Hepworth’s nearly 400-page Abbey Road: The Inside Story Of The World’s Most Famous Recording Studio, is all you’ll ever need to know about the history of the place, from its beginnings, through the war years, the rise of ‘pop’ music, those famous Beatles and pretty much everything else about the famous place in the St. Johns Wood, section of northwest London.
It’s a must for a fan of any music.
I loved learning about people like Al Bowlly and Hazel Yarwood, as much hearing more details about George Martin. And while plenty of books have been written about Abbey Road, I doubt any have been researched like Hepworth’s book. His deep dive over the culture of the times, the equipment the studio either acquired or invented, how music and the business of it changed inside and outside Abbey Road, in the UK and the US, are all pieces of the overall story we get in this read…making the book even better than just a rich history of a famous place, which this book is as well.
