“[Carin León is] a game changer if there was one.”
“…one of the most prominent and influential figures in Regional Mexican music today,
known for his rich storytelling and dazzling instrumental skills.”
“Known best by the cowboy hat he wears cocked to the side and his blues-
inflected Sonoran croon, the Latin,Grammy-winning balladeer carries himself with the steely gaze of a cowboy and the swagger of a rock star.”
Story: Ralph Greco, Jr.
Today, Global Mexican artist Carin León unveils the music video for his latest song “Por La Familia” which features BorderKid by award-winning producer Edgar Barrera. The video was created in-house by Cash App in partnership with director Stillz (Bad Bunny, Lil Nas X and Rosalia) with guest appearance from Red Bull Racing’s Sergio “Checo” Perez—watch/share the video here.
Of the video, León states, “always looking forward, I never look back.” The song and video pay homage to Leon and Checo’s Mexican roots and a shared journey of determination and perseverance.
“I’m always excited by the idea of trying something new, and the opportunity to collaborate with Carin on his latest music video was too good to pass up,” said Sergio “Checo” Perez. “I enjoy working with artists who are passionate about their culture and bring joy to their fans, and the message behind Por La Familia is something that really resonates with me personally. I’m grateful to Cash App for bringing all of us together for such a unique project.”
“Por La Familia” focuses on a version of León who is no longer focusing on the past, but, is beginning to let go of those people in his life who were never there for him, never believed in him and no longer serve a purpose in his life.
Cash App brought together Carin and Edgar for “Por La Familia.” They previously joined forces when BorderKid by Edgar Barrera first launched in early 2022 with Carin León’s and Grupo Frontera’s “Que Vuelvas,” which reached #1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay charts and reached #1 on the radio.
Most recently, León completed an extensive sold-out run of U.S. tour dateswith his “Colmillo de Leche Tour.” The 38 date arena tour hit major cities across the country, including stops at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, Newark’s Prudential Center, Houston’s Toyota Center and Miami’s Kaseya Center.
León’s new album, Colmillo de Leche, continues to receeive widespread critical praise since its release this past May; NPR Music proclaims, “[Carin León is] a game changer if there was one.” The 18-track record spanns various musical genres, showcasing León’s maturity and versatility as an artist. Colmillo de Leche also features collaborations with internationally renowned artists such as Camilo on “Ni Me Debes Ni Te Debo,” Pablo Alborán on “Piedra Papel” and Angela Aguilar on “Vete Yendo.” Currently, “Según Quien” sits at #23 on the Spotify Global chart while “Primera Cita” sits at #27.
Colmillo de Leche is one of the most important projects I’ve done throughout my career,” recalls León. “I get to show feelings and dabble in styles that I had not dared to before. Always keeping the Regional Mexican sound as the soul of the album, but fused with flamenco, a bit of salsa, country, American folklore, blues and soul. All the genres that have shaped me as an artist and as a person. Being able to mix it all together on one record is something very refreshing, both personally and for the Regional Mexican genre.”
Originally from Hermosillo, which is located in the center of the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, León was raised in a family where music was always present. León embarked on his musical journey at the age of 15, taking his first steps by learning to play the guitar and developing skills in singing and songwriting. In 2018, León released his debut album, Desvelada con Banda y Mariachi, which propelled him to quickly dominate the Regional Mexican music scene as a performer, singer and songwriter. From there, León colaborated with internationally renowned artists such as the Spanish rapper C. Tangana on the song “¡CAMBIA!,” the Mexican pop group Matisse on “Como Lo Hice Yo” and the Venezuelan pop/reggaeton duo Mau y Ricky on “Llorar y Llorar” as well as writing hits for various Regional Mexican stars like Los Plebes del Rancho and El Fantasma.
In 2021, León became the first Regional Mexican artist to participate in the Spotify Singles series and he teamed up with country music star Walker Hayes for a Spanglish version of “Fancy Like” for Amazon Music Latin’s “La Cultura That Connects Us” campaign. In the same year, his album INÉDITO debuted atop the Apple Music charts, reaching #1 on the Mexican Music chart and #3 on the Latin Music chart. INÉDITO was named one of Billboard‘s 25 Best Latin Albums of 2021 and León also took part in the “Regional No More—Mexican Music Goes Global” panel as part of Billboard Latin Music Week.
Throughout his young career León has received countless nominations and multiple awards, including an ASCAP Award for the song “Me La Aventé” as well as numerous Premio Lo Nuestro Awards (“Regional Mexican Breakthrough Artist,” “Best Male Artist” and “Banda Song of the Year”). In addition, León won his first Latin Grammy for “Best Regional Mexican Song” in 2022 for the song “Como lo Hice Yo,” which was released in collaboration with Mexican pop group Matisse. He recently received two nominations for the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards, and another nomination to the 24th edition of the Latin GRAMMY® Awards.
