Interview: Sherman Way

Editor: Ralph Greco

Story: Ralph Greco, Jr.

On the eve of the release of “Pig Killer,” the most controversial film Released in 2023, it’s star, Ginger Lynn, {herself no stranger to controversy}, sat down with the Emmreport to discuss quite possibly the most complex character she’s ever played. Given her impressive resume that includes NYPD Blue, Metallica and Rob Zombie to name just a few, that’s saying a lot.

“Pig Killer” is based on the true story of Robert ‘Willy’ Pickton, the pig farmer/prolific lady killer. Pickton, his pig Balthazar, and a menagerie of cohorts terrorized Vancouver’s downtown Eastside for almost two decades until he was arrested in 2002, leading to the uncovering of the most bizarre series of murders Canada has ever seen. The film stars: Jake Busey (Starship Troopers, The Frighteners, Stranger Things), Ginger Lynn (The Devil’s Rejects, Rob Zombie’s 31), Bai Ling (The Crow, Crank: High Voltage, Southland Tales), Lew Temple (The Walking Dead, Unstoppable) and Kate Patel (Scalper).

The film was produced By Crappy World/Girls and Corpses/Laurelwood Pictures, written and directed by Chad Ferrin, and produced by Robert Rhine, Chad Ferrin and Robert Miano. Rhine and Miano also perform in the film. The film’s score is by Gerard McMann, who also appears in the film as himself (The Lost Boys, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Chasing Amy). Other cast members include: Michael Pare (The Lincoln Lawyer), James Russo (Open Range), Cyril O’Reilly (Alien Rising), Robert Rhine (Exorcism At 60,000 Feet), Robert Miano (Donnie Brasco), Susan Priver (Night Caller), Kurt Bonzell (Parasites), Cassandra Gava (The Black Room), Silvia Spross (Giallo), Scott Vogel (Scalper), Jon Budinoff (Transamerica), Elina Madison (Turnover) and others.

“Ginger Lynn is a fantastic actress and very brave playing the challenging role of Louise, the psychotic mother to Jake Busey’s serial killer character, Willy. Ginger is not afraid to let it all hang out and really go for it. Ginger is a consummate professional and comes to set ready to work. I would love to have Ginger Lynn in all my films.”

— Robert Corpsy Rhine  President Girls and Corpses Films/Producer Pig Killer

SW: Producer Robert Rhine told me how impressed he was with all the prep work you did on Pig Killer.

GL:  Yeah, I grew my underarm hair on my legs for three months. They gave me such an amazing script to work with and a character that I was actually really afraid of. I’ve never played a character this intense. It took me three weeks to even take the role. I’m like, I don’t know if I can do this. Then the actor in me went, ‘Wait a minute. This is a fucking brilliant opportunity. Go for it.’ And so, I did a lot of homework. I actually turned into her. I sound like such a geek when I say this, but you know, I walked, talked, and acted like her for a couple of weeks before filming. I dressed like I thought she would dress. I thought the way that she would. I studied with Milton Katselas at the Beverly Hills Playhouse for six years, and we did scene study. For so long, I was cast as the hooker, the stripper, you know, the sex person. And now I’m getting these meaty, juicy rolls that are just…it’s the highest high that I get when I nail it, and I feel good about it. “Pig Killer” is one of those that I warn everyone, ‘You’re not going to like me. You’re just not. There’s nothing redeeming about this woman at all. So don’t forget, you know the nice part of me.’

SW: What was this production like shooting for you? Was it a big shoot? Was it difficult?

GL: I would arrive every day on the set, and first thing I would do is go to craft services and get something to eat. There was always really good food in the morning. We had a wonderful caterer. I made friends with Spunky. Spunky is a pig. She’s about nine hundred pounds. She’s ginormous. I would go out, and I would share my breakfast with her. She had these big, beautiful ears, and I would rub the inside of her ears, and she would get down on her knees and rollover. I’ve got this beast rolling over and sharing my breakfast every morning. So, that was the first thing that popped into my mind. Getting to work with Lou Temple and Jake Busey, I played their mother; they’re brothers. What a great fucking opportunity that was. What I liked about this set, this film, is that everybody really cared. One of the things that I learned how to do in filmmaking. You know, we learned how to film a movie in two weeks. And when you’re doing independent films, you know the budgets, there’s no room for error. You have to know your shit. You have to do it when you get there.  Because of my experience in the adult industry, I carried that through into horror films. I’m able to go in and be prepared and able to do what I’m supposed to do. Everyone on the movie cared. Everybody wanted their part to help the movie become bigger and better. It’s probably next to the Saw films; as far as holy fuck, moments go, this is a holy fuck movie the whole time. It’s just nonstop. Oh, ooh, cringe. Oh, no. It’ll keep you on your toes. You might vomit at certain points. I don’t want to give away the story, but it’s just, you know, based on a true story. The man Robert, that Jake plays, I don’t know if the word celebrated is right, but he celebrated his 20th anniversary in prison while we were filming “Pig Killer,” the actual man who committed these crimes.

Everybody, all of the other actors, we were such a great ensemble, loving. It was my little family for a couple of weeks.

SW: Were there any parts of the script, the shooting, anything where you felt like, ‘Okay, you guys are really pushing it now.’

GL: Pretty much all of it. Yeah. It pushes the envelope in nearly every scene. If it’s not pushing in that scene, it’s building up to the next moment.
