Kacy Hill unveils a new video for “Easy Going” today via PAPER—watch here and read their Q&A here. The track is taken from Hill’s new album Simple, Sweet, and Smiling, out now—listen here.
Simple, Sweet, and Smiling, which Hill made largely with collaborators John Carroll Kirby (Frank Ocean, Solange), Ariel Rechtshaid (Adele, Vampire Weekend, Charli XCX) and Jim-E Stack (Caroline Polachek, HAIM, Dominic Fike), is receiving widespread critical praise:
Simple, Sweet, and Smiling delves deeper into Hill’s interest in 1980s synth pop and adult contemporary, maintaining a misty-eyed ease. She sounds lovely on the rich and churning opening track, ‘I Couldn’t Wait.’ ‘Oh how the night feels soft,’ she sighs over vivid piano, guitar, and saxophone, the elements
mingling like watercolors.”—Pitchfork
“The title track of Kacy Hill’s great exhale of a third album serves as its thesis statement of sorts: at a time in history where each day brings fresh hell, can one ever ascend to a state of simple bliss? For four minutes it feels possible, as she glides through the marshmallowy soft atmosphere with enough fleeting clarity to part even the most stubborn clouds.”—FADER
“The singer-songwriter is finally finding success and creative validation
on her own terms.”—Women’s Wear Daily
“Its title track stands out for the way in which Hill’s firm yet delicate vocals float over the song’s intricately built backbone, co-produced by Jim-E Stack, which seamlessly changes at each turn.”—Billboard
“Hill returns as one of pop’s most promising powerhouses with a collection of eleven pristine tracks designed to put you in an introspective emotional trance. She delivers carefully-crafted pristine pop stamped with her signature musical style at every moment.”—Ones to Watch
Furthermore, Hill will embark on her first ever U.S. headline tour next week with dates including New York’s Mercury LoungeLos Angeles’ Moroccan Lounge and more. Tickets are on sale now at kacyhill.com.
Simple, Sweet, and Smiling is a document of Hill working through hardship—her dad suffered a heart attack right as she was beginning the album, and her own latent anxiety disorder began to surface. She confronts these feelings of powerlessness in the face of her own mind and mortality, while giving thanks to the partners, friends and family who have helped her through. Simple, Sweet, and Smiling, has many meanings—it’s genuinely aspirational; an acknowledgement of gratefulness for those moments in which clarity briefly breaks through mental anguish; and a tongue-in-cheek admission of something which for many of us never quite feels possible.
Born and raised in Phoenix and now living in Los Angeles, Hill got her start in 2014 when her self-released single “Experience,” the second song Hill had ever recorded, started attracting attention online. After touring with Kanye West and Vanessa Beecroft as part of the cast of the YEEZUS tour, Hill signed to West’s imprint G.O.O.D. Music. Her debut EP Bloo came shortly thereafter, and she’s since released two albums: 2017’s Like A Woman and 2020’s independently issued Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again. Throughout her career, Hill has collaborated and shared stages with Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Bon Iver, Francis and the Lights, Cashmere Cat and countless others.
