This Friday, New Jersey-based GROUND will issue their fifth LP, Habitual Self-Abuse, through Hibernation Release. No Echo is currently hosting an exclusive advance stream of the entire record.
Formed in 2012, GROUND has released a plethora of recordings, including four albums, a split with Bandit, and more. Now a decade in, the band returns with a vengeance on their most violent and ambitious offering with their fifth album, Habitual Self-Abuse. Seamlessly blending their signature brand of searing grindcore, punk, powerviolence and slam, GROUND funnels the futile rage and anxiety associated with modern existence into eleven tracks of pure, adrenaline-fueled auditory assault. With Habitual Self-Abuse, the band cements themselves as a key component of the thriving East Coast metal scene and further their legacy as torch bearers of the underground. False Grind Forever.
Habitual Self-Abuse was engineered in March 2022 by AJ Viana at AJ Viana Productions in Hulmeville, Pennsylvania, with additional editing by Tiago “Canadas” Carvalho. The album was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, 200 Stab Wounds, R.A.M.B.O.) and completed with cover art by Tom Maher/Skull Bastard Art and photography by Albert Rende.
GROUND’s guitarist/vocalist Mike Mayo states, “In terms of style and direction, Habitual-Self Abuse picks up where our last album left off, however the performances are tighter, and the arrangements are a little more technical. We wanted each song to have their own identity while staying true to our formula, which I think we did pretty well on this album. We love grindcore, death metal, hardcore, and powerviolence, and just want to put all those ingredients in the pot to cook up something we would like to hear. I’m super happy with the ending result, and I hope listeners are too.”
No Echo writes, “Taking a look at Tom Maher’s album art for Habitual Self-Abuse, it’s with little surprise that the sounds it’s representing brings to mind the golden age of Earache Records. Yes, the forthcoming fifth album from New Jersey’s GROUND has a lot in common with the grindcore magic of classic Napalm Death, but there’s also a certain East Coast-flavored hardcore to their approach.”
Stream GROUND’s entire Habitual Self-Abuse first now at No Echo RIGHT HERE.
Hibernation Release will issue Habitual Self-Abuse on CD, cassette, and all digital platforms this Friday, October 28th, with a deluxe vinyl edition to follow in Spring 2023. Find preorders for all formats at the label webshop HERE and Bandcamp HERE, and digital presaves HERE. Also watch the “Indurated Juvenescence” video HERE.
Having just supported Deadguy in Philadelphia last weekend, GROUND will announce new shows in the weeks ahead.
