After languishing in development hell for over a decade, an adaptation of Boston Teran’s celebrated thriller novel God is A Bullet is gaining new ground as Nick Cassavetes (Prisoners of the Ghostland) is set in the writer/director’s chair and has begun building an ensemble roster including Jamie Foxx, Maika Monroe and more.
“I am excited to get God Is A Bullet into production with my friend and producer/financer, Michael Mendelsohn,” Cassavetes said in a statement. “It’s a magnificent, ultra-dark work that is somehow both intensely frightening and literate, inspired by true events, with the most amazing cast of actors.”
In addition to Foxx (Soul) and Monroe (The Stranger), the full roster for the cast is currently set to include two-time Emmy nominee Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, The Silencing), Emmy nominee January Jones (Mad Men, Spinning Out) and Andrew Dice Clay (A Star is Born).
When vice detective Bob Hightower (Coster-Waldau) finds his ex-wife murdered and daughter kidnapped by a satanic cult — Bob is frustrated by bumbling botched official investigations. Bob quits the police force, gets tattoos, and infiltrates the cult to hunt down the charismatic cult leader, Cyrus, with the help of the cult’s only female victim escapee, the brilliantly damaged, Case Hardin (Monroe). Bob is lead down the rabbit hole to save his daughter and Case seizes the opportunity to claim back her power from the cult that took so much away from her.
The film is set to be produced by Mendelsohn via Patriot Pictures alongside Don Allen, while Kim H. Winther and Jim Steele are set to co-produce and Sidney Kimmel, Chuck Pacheco, Paul Johansson and Natalie Perrotta aRELATED: Cumberbatch & Trevorrow Teaming For WWII Drama War Magician
Pre-production on God is a Bullet is currently underway in Mexico City, Mexico and production is currently slated to begin on May 24, with XYZ Films representing worldwide sales on the project while Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital Management is fully financing. An adaptation of the novel was first announced in the late ’00s with Ehren Kruger (Dumbo, Top Gun: Maverick) set to pen and co-produce, though it appears that project has perished in development hell.
