Joe Barton joins Matt Reeves’ Gotham PD series as showrunner

After seeing Emmy and Oscar nominee Terence Winter depart the series as showrunner late last year, Matt Reeves’ Gotham City Police Department series set in the world of the highly-anticipated The Batman has found a new showrunner and executive producer in the form of Joe Barton (The Ritual), according to Variety.

The untitled series will be set in the world Reeves is currently creating for the 2022 DC Extended Universe installment and will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Dark Knight universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.

During DC FanDome, Reeves has revealed that that the Gotham City PD series will be taking the story back to Year One and will be set before the Robert Pattinson-led 2022 film. The idea is we go back to Year One. Year One is the beginning, it’s the first appearance of this masked vigilante that unsettles the city. You start to see the story through the point of view of these corrupt cops and one in particular. The story is actually a battle for his soul. He’s a cop over generations and the history of corruption in Gotham is enormous and goes back many years.”

The project comes on the heels of Reeves’ overall deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group, under which he will help develop and produce various series across WarnerMedia’s multiple platforms including fresh streaming service HBO Max.

Reeves’ 6th & Idaho production company will produce the series in association with Warner Bros. Television. Reeves will executive produce with Dylan Clark (Bird Box, Rise, Dawn, and War for Planet of the Apes). The drama, which is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, will also be executive produced by 6th & Idaho’s Daniel Pipski (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) and Adam Kassan (Tales from the Loop) while Rafi Crohn (Tales from the Loop) will co-executive produce. Warner Bros. International Television Distribution will distribute the series globally.
