Nina Nova Examines Porn, Power and Pleasure on Humanizing SEX -

LAS VEGAS — Nina Nova offers an unusually candid examination of adult entertainment, sexual culture and the politics of pleasure in Episode 23 of Humanizing SEX, hosted by licensed professional counselor and sex therapist Yub Kim.

The hour-long conversation traces Nova’s path from sexual-health and reproductive-rights policy and organizing work into adult entertainment, where experience complicated and reshaped ideas she once held about empowerment and liberation.

“I’ve always identified with the pursuit of pleasure and the idea that pleasure is power,” Nova says. “But now I get to do it a little bit differently.”

Rather than treating pornography as isolated entertainment, Nova argues that its internal standards affect the culture surrounding it. “What we allow in porn, what we normalize in the industry of porn, impacts our entire society,” she explains. “It creates a societal undertone of what is allowed and what is permissible.”

The discussion moves through talent agencies, gatekeeping, performer autonomy, creator-platform economics, performer safety, media literacy and the tension between sexual freedom and exploitative structures.

Nova’s independent, predominantly self-booked career informs her belief that creator-controlled media can weaken traditional gatekeeping. “I think that is what is going to be the thing that buckles the agency system,” she says.

Those ideas will continue through The Pleasure Paradox, Nova’s forthcoming SFW media project about sexuality, power, relationships, embodiment and cultural contradictions. “I want to start talking about pleasure as power and pleasure as political and pleasure without permission,” she says.

Nova sees pleasure as a possible foundation for safer communities rather than a subject pushed outside serious cultural discussion. “I think sex workers can teach us a lot,” she says. Episode 23 is available now on major podcast platforms.
