Princess Jezebel Questions Mainstream Adoption of Trans and Ballroom Language

LONDON, UK — Princess Jezebel is challenging the mainstream entertainment world to examine how it borrows language from trans, queer and ballroom communities while trans people continue to face discrimination and marginalization.

Expressions such as “serving,” “it’s giving,” “spill the tea,” “clocking the tea,” “cunty,” “doll” and “diva” have moved into everyday online conversation and youth culture.

Jezebel argues that many of these expressions were shaped within Black and Latino queer, drag and ballroom spaces, including the work of trans women whose cultural contributions are not always acknowledged.

“As a trans child, I remember watching The Silence of the Lambs with my brothers and sisters when I was 12 and seeing Buffalo Bill presented through the imagery of gender transition as a murderous predator,” said Jezebel. “I grew up in a media culture that taught audiences to fear people like me, and now I live in a world where that same culture hijacks our language for cultural capital. There is an extraordinary contradiction in celebrating what trans people create while continuing to demonise trans people themselves.”

She points to Madonna’s 1990 single “Vogue” as a historical example of ballroom culture reaching a much wider audience after being developed within predominantly Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities.

In Jezebel’s view, that cultural crossover raises questions about who receives visibility, credit and commercial benefit when creative work moves from marginalized communities into mainstream markets.

The London-based professional dominatrix previously worked in the touring music industry and now comments publicly on trans identity, culture and life in modern Britain.

She also founded a community serving trans and non-binary BDSM professionals across the UK and Ireland, and has been featured in Darkside, Archer, AIP Daily and Cracked Magazine.
