Post Death Soundtrack: Veil Lifter

Story: Ralph Greco, Jr.

As if we are interrupting a radio signal, with some layered vocals around it, Post Death Soundtrack starts their new and fourth full-length Veil Lifter, swiftly bringing us into the heavy grunge and first real tune, “The Die Is Cast,” We even get a surprise at about the 3-minute mark here as things slow down to a soft picked electric and sly softer vocal.

It’s obvious from the jump here that Jon Ireson and Stephen Moore, the masterminds behind this Vancouver-based “psychedelic doom grunge duo” are masters of their craft.

“Icy Underground,” gives us a slow plod, an overdriven guitar line that somewhat distracts from another great Moore lead and harmony vocal but is still yet another killer tune from this collection of near dozen.

Casey Lewis’s drumming needs to be highlighted, as he delivers the back-beat, in-the-pocket drive throughout Veil Lifter, from snare rim hits to rumbling toms, and by the time we get just about halfway, there is a trio of hard hitters I simply love. “Tide Turns,” showcases another great Moore vocal. “Burrowing Down The Spike,” is relentless like nothing else here, and Moore screams for his life (but never loses sight of the melody) on one of my faves, “Pin Prick.”

“Hammer Come Down,” ends the record, the layered guitars work perfectly, Moore’s drawn-out end of vocal lines and the entire concoction coming close to splintering apart near the 4-minute mark. That is doesn’t, that this entire wild ride works the listener to the edge of the seat, and that Post Death Soundtrack rock hard throughout, shows not only what a great record Veil Lifter is, but renews one’s faith in the rockin’ grunge world.
